bonito fish

🥗Healthier: tuna

💰Cheaper: mackerel

Tuna is a leaner option, while mackerel is often less expensive and still flavorful.

white wine

🥗Healthier: chicken broth

💰Cheaper: apple cider vinegar

Chicken broth adds depth without alcohol, while vinegar offers acidity at a lower cost.

1

Heat olive oil in a skillet.

2

Add chopped green bell pepper and sauté until it starts to color.

3

While the pepper cooks, flour the bonito fish pieces in a colander with a little salt.

4

Once the bonito is floured, set it aside.

5

Add sliced garlic to the skillet and cook for about 20 seconds until lightly browned.

6

Add piquillo peppers to the skillet and stir for a couple of minutes.

7

Pour in homemade tomato sauce and let it fry for about 5 minutes with the lid on to avoid splatter.

8

In a separate pot, heat oil for frying the bonito.

9

Carefully add the floured bonito pieces to the hot oil in batches, frying for exactly 1 minute until golden and then set aside on absorbent paper.

10

Once the tomato sauce has been frying for a while, add the bonito back into the sauce and cook for 2 minutes.

11

Remove from heat and let it rest for a bit before serving.
