Smothered Salisbury Steak

Smothered Salisbury Steak is a classic American comfort food, often associated with home-cooked meals in the mid-20th century. Named after Dr. James Salisbury, it was originally promoted as a health food in the 1800s. Today, this dish is cherished for its hearty flavors and satisfying gravy, making it a staple in many households. Variations exist across the country, with some adding different seasonings or vegetables to the mix.

Almond milk reduces calories while maintaining moisture
Break up 2 pounds of ground beef in a bowl.
Add 1/2 cup of panko breadcrumbs to the beef.
Crack in 2 eggs and mix to bind the ingredients together.
Add 1-2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper to the mixture.
Mix everything together with gloves on until well combined.
Form the mixture into oval patties, about 1 inch thick, using a measuring cup for uniform size.
Heat a couple tablespoons of cooking oil and 2 tablespoons of butter in a cast iron enamel pot over medium-high heat.
Cook the patties in batches for about 5-6 minutes on one side until browned, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes until cooked through.
Remove the patties and set them aside on a plate.
Slice 2 medium yellow onions thinly and add them to the pot with the remaining grease.
Cook the onions until they are soft and caramelized, scraping the bottom of the pot to get the flavor.
Add 2 packets of brown gravy mix to the onions, followed by 2 cups of beef broth and 1/2 cup of water, stirring to combine.
Let the gravy simmer and thicken, adding more water if needed.
Submerge the cooked patties in the gravy, cover, and let simmer on low heat.
Prepare mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli as sides.
Serve the Salisbury steaks topped with fresh parsley.
