Texas Barbecue Beef Brisket

Cultural Context

Texas barbecue is a celebrated tradition that dates back to the early 19th century, characterized by slow-cooked meats and a smoky flavor. Brisket, a cut of beef, is particularly revered in Texas, often served during gatherings and celebrations. The communal experience of sharing barbecue has made it a staple in American culture, with variations emerging across the country, but Texas remains the gold standard for brisket lovers.

Homemade sauce can be made with less sugar and preservatives.

1

Start by preparing a 2.5 pound beef brisket for the crock-pot.

2

Pour half a bottle of barbecue sauce into the crock-pot liner.

3

Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the barbecue sauce.

4

Add 1 teaspoon of coarse black ground pepper.

5

Add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt.

6

Add 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder.

7

Add 1/4 teaspoon of dry mustard.

8

Add a few drops of liquid smoke to the mixture.

9

Mix all the ingredients in the crock-pot liner well.

10

Coat the beef brisket well with the barbecue sauce mixture, turning it over a couple of times.

11

Put the lid on the crock-pot and refrigerate the brisket to marinate for 3 to 4 hours, preferably overnight.

12

Prepare the side dishes while the brisket is marinating.

13

For the jazzed up baked beans, combine one can of vegetarian baked beans with a chopped onion.

14

Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to the beans.

15

Drizzle in about 2 tablespoons of ketchup.

16

Add a couple of drops of Worcestershire sauce to the mixture.

17

Mix the baked bean ingredients well and place them in a 300-degree oven to cook slowly.

18

After marinating for 4 hours, place the brisket into the crock-pot and turn it on high for 4 hours.

19

After 4 hours, check if the brisket is ready and slice it against the grain after letting it sit out a bit.

20

Serve the brisket on a platter or on a warm hoagie roll with extra barbecue sauce, chopped onions, and pickled jalapeno peppers if desired.
