Shepherd's Pie

Cultural Context

Shepherd's Pie is a traditional British dish that originated as a way to use leftover meat. It is typically made with ground lamb, reflecting its name, as shepherds tend to raise sheep. The dish has evolved over time and is now enjoyed in various forms, often with a topping of mashed potatoes. It is a comforting meal commonly served in homes and pubs across the UK, especially during colder months.

1

Clean, peel, and cube the potatoes.

2

Place the cubed potatoes in the inner pot of the Ninja Foodi and add 3 cups of beef broth.

3

Secure the lid and set to high pressure for 10 minutes.

4

Quickly release the pressure by venting the lid.

5

Remove the potatoes and add them to a bowl, saving the broth in a cup for later.

6

Set the Ninja Foodi to the sauté function at level 4 and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil, bacon bits, and chopped onions.

7

Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.

8

Add ground beef, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasonings, dry basil, paprika, and pepper; cook until the beef is about 3/4 of the way done.

9

Add corn, mixed vegetables, and Worcestershire sauce; cook for 4 to 5 minutes until well cooked.

10

Sprinkle with flour and continue cooking for 2 minutes to thicken.

11

Pour about 3/4 cup of the saved broth into the mixture and stir until thick and spreadable.

12

Mash the cooked potatoes with a hand masher, adding salt, butter, and heavy cream or half and half to your liking.

13

Spread the mashed potatoes on top of the meat and vegetable mixture without mixing them in.

14

Top with grated Parmesan cheese and shredded Colby Jack cheese.

15

Secure the air fryer lid and air fry at 375°F for 4 to 6 minutes until the cheese is crispy and melted.
