Swiss Steak, despite its name, is an American dish that originated from the practice of 'swissing' or tenderizing meat. It reflects the resourcefulness of home cooks in using tougher cuts of beef, transforming them into a flavorful meal through slow cooking. Today, it's a comforting classic enjoyed in many households, often served with hearty sides.
Pound out the round steak using a meat tenderizer and parchment paper.
Heat the Ninja Foodi on sear sauté with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
Prepare a dredging mixture with 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.
Dredge the pounded steak in the flour mixture lightly.
Brown the steak in the heated oil for about 3 minutes on each side.
Remove the browned steak and deglaze the pot with 1/4 cup beef stock.
Add 1 can of fire roasted tomatoes to the pot.
Add 1 sliced sweet onion and 2 thick carrots to the pot.
Add the browned steak back to the pot, ensuring it is submerged in the liquid.
Add 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the pot.
Place a rack in the pot and add garlic on top for the smashed potatoes.
