Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a baking pan with butter or cooking spray.
Separate the eggs into yolks and whites in two bowls.
Beat the egg yolks with sugar until pale and creamy.
Melt the butter and let it cool slightly, then add to the yolk mixture.
Mix in vanilla extract and milk until combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until smooth.
In another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg whites into the batter in three additions, being careful not to deflate them.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Serve with fruit preserves, whipped cream, or chocolate shavings.
