Baklava, a beloved dessert across the Middle East and the Caucasus, is thought to have originated in the Ottoman Empire. In Azerbaijan, it holds a special place during festive occasions, symbolizing hospitality and celebration. Each region boasts its unique twist, with variations in nuts and spices, making baklava a cherished treat worldwide, enjoyed by many during holidays and gatherings.

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. 2Grease a baking dish with melted butter.
  3. 3Layer sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each layer with butter.
  4. 4Chop walnuts finely and mix with sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of clove.
  5. 5Spread a layer of the walnut mixture over the phyllo.
  6. 6Continue layering phyllo and walnut mixture until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo on top.
  7. 7Cut the baklava into diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
  8. 8Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  9. 9While baklava is baking, combine water, sugar, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla in a saucepan.
  10. 10Simmer the syrup for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  11. 11Remove baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
  12. 12Allow baklava to cool completely before serving.

  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. 2In a bowl, mix the chopped pistachios, walnuts, 1/2 cup sugar, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  3. 3Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  4. 4Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it with butter. Repeat this process, layering 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  5. 5Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. 6Layer 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then add another layer of the nut mixture. Repeat this process until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with 8 layers of phyllo on top, brushing each with butter.
  7. 7Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  8. 8Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. 9While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining water, honey, 1/2 cup sugar, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  10. 10Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Allow it to cool completely before serving.
