Shepherd's Pie

Cultural Context

Shepherd's Pie is a traditional British dish that originated as a way to use leftover meat. It is typically made with ground lamb, reflecting its name, as shepherds tend to raise sheep. The dish has evolved over time and is now enjoyed in various forms, often with a topping of mashed potatoes. It is a comforting meal commonly served in homes and pubs across the UK, especially during colder months.

1

Rinse the potatoes, peel them, and cut into big pieces.

2

Boil the potatoes with a little salt until tender.

3

Drain the water and put the potatoes back on the stove to remove excess water.

4

Add 2 slices of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and 4 tablespoons of evaporating milk to the potatoes.

5

Add half a teaspoon of salt and about a teaspoon of black pepper to the potatoes.

6

Add about a cup and a half of cheese to the potato mixture and mix until combined.

7

In a skillet, add one whole onion and one pound of pork sausage, and mix together.

8

Add 2 pounds of ground beef to the skillet and brown the mixture.

9

Season the meat with about 4 teaspoons of salt and pepper, or use chicken rub from www.carspices.com.

10

Add about 3 tablespoons of garlic to the meat mixture.

11

Add two handfuls of mushrooms to the skillet and about a tablespoon of thyme, and let it cook down.

12

Add mixed veggies, including cut green beans, to the meat mixture and let it cook down.

13

Add a small can of cream of chicken soup to the meat mixture, and mix well.

14

If desired, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of flour and some heavy cream or milk to thicken the mixture.

15

Distribute the mixture evenly in a 9x13 pan, reserving some to freeze for later.

16

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, bringing it to the edges.

17

Sprinkle cheese on top of the mashed potatoes, covering as much as possible.

18

Add black pepper on top if desired.

19

Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 5 to 10 minutes until the cheese melts.

20

Let the shepherd's pie cool for a few minutes before serving.
