Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, slice the cake in half horizontally to create two layers.
Spread a layer of canned cherries on the bottom half of the cake.
Whip sour cream with sugar until soft peaks form and spread over the cherries.
Place the top layer of the cake back on and frost the entire cake with remaining whipped sour cream.
Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
