Irish Brown Soda Bread has its roots in Ireland, where it was traditionally made by rural families using simple ingredients. The bread symbolizes sustenance and community, often served alongside meals. Today, it remains a staple in Irish households and is celebrated for its hearty texture and wholesome flavor, enjoyed globally in various adaptations.
Start with 2 cups of whole wheat flour.
Add 1 cup of bran and 1/4 cup of germ to the flour.
Mix in 1 cup of all-purpose flour to cut the weediness.
Add 2 teaspoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of table salt, 1.5 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1.5 teaspoons of baking powder.
Whisk the dry ingredients together.
Add 2 cups of buttermilk and stir until the flour absorbs the buttermilk, resulting in a rough craggy texture.
Turn the mixture out onto a board and shape it into a 6-inch round.
Cut a 5-inch cross in the top of the dough, about 1/2 inch deep.
Transfer the dough to an 8-inch cake pan.
Bake in an oven preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 to 45 minutes, rotating halfway through.
Check the internal temperature; it should be 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
Invert the bread onto a cooling rack, then reinvert it.
Let the bread cool for about an hour before slicing.
