Baklava is a traditional pastry with roots in the Ottoman Empire, often enjoyed during celebrations and special occasions. Its layers of phyllo dough and nuts, sweetened with syrup, symbolize wealth and hospitality. Today, variations abound, with different nuts and spices used, making it a beloved dessert in many cultures worldwide.

Maple syrup provides a different flavor profile while being more accessible.
Start by chopping whole almonds and pecans until they are finely chopped.
Add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg to the chopped nuts.
Mix in 1 tablespoon of sugar with the nut mixture and set aside.
Melt 1.5 sticks of butter for brushing between layers.
Take one pack of phyllo dough out of the freezer and let it thaw overnight.
Cut the phyllo dough in half to fit the baking dish.
Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing melted butter between every two sheets.
After the base layer, add a third of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo layers.
Drizzle honey generously over the nut mixture.
Continue layering with phyllo dough, butter, and nut mixture until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo on top.
Cut the baklava into 25 pieces before baking.
Preheat the oven to 325°F and bake for 45 minutes.
Let the baklava sit for 2-3 hours before serving to allow the honey to soak in.
