Cultural Context
Thai Basil Beef, known as 'Pad Krapow Moo', is a popular street food dish in Thailand, often enjoyed for its bold flavors and quick preparation.
Prepare the sauce by mixing 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce, 1 tablespoon fish sauce, 1 tablespoon coconut sugar or brown sugar, and 1 tablespoon sriracha in a bowl.
Heat a large wok or high wall non-stick pan over medium-high heat and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
Once the oil begins to smoke, add 1 pound extra lean ground beef and break it apart while cooking.
Allow the beef to cook until all the liquid (water and rendered fat) has evaporated.
Add 1 sliced bell pepper, 1 large sliced onion, and 5 cloves of minced garlic to the pan and mix well.
Cook the mixture, stirring consistently to prevent the garlic from burning, until the vegetables are cooked through (about 5 minutes).
Add 1 cup of roughly torn basil leaves to the pan and cook for about 30 seconds until the leaves start to wilt.
Pour the prepared sauce into the pan and stir to coat all ingredients, cooking for about 1 minute until it becomes sticky.
Remove from heat and plate the dish, adding any starch (like egg noodles, rice, or cauliflower rice) to absorb the juices from the meat if desired.
Garnish with a couple pieces of torn fresh basil before serving.
