Whisk together 1 3/4 cups flour, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 4 teaspoons baking powder in a bowl and set aside.
Cream together 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy for about 3 minutes.
Add the flour mixture and 3 tablespoons of canola oil to the butter and sugar mixture and mix for 1-2 minutes.
Add 5 ounces of orange flavored jello and mix well.
In another bowl, whisk together 4 eggs, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 3/4 cup whole milk, 3/4 cup dark rum, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.
Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and mix for 1-2 minutes until fully combined.
Fold in 1 cup of chopped walnuts gently.
Butter the loaf pan and optionally sprinkle walnuts at the bottom.
Pour the batter into the loaf pan, filling it halfway.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the loaf for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
While the cake is baking, prepare the glaze by melting 3/4 cup of butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar and 1/4 cup water to the melted butter and mix for about 5 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and syrupy.
Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup dark rum, then return to low heat for 1 minute.
Once the cake is done, poke holes all over the top with a skewer while it's still hot.
Slowly pour the rum syrup over the loaf, allowing it to absorb.
