Today, variations abound, including these cookie bars that capture the essence of the original while offering a fun twist for gatherings and celebrations.

In a bowl, mix 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 1 stick of softened butter, and 1/4 cup of white sugar.
Place the mixture in a double boiler and stir until melted.
Add 1 lightly beaten egg and stir for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
In a food processor, grind about 10 full sheets of graham crackers (1 and 3/4 cup) and mix with 1/2 cup of almonds and 1 cup of sweetened shredded coconut flakes.
Press the mixture into a greased 8x8 pan and refrigerate for a few minutes.
For the custard layer, mix 1 stick of softened butter, 2 tablespoons of instant vanilla pudding, and 3 tablespoons of heavy cream until smooth.
Add 2 cups of powdered sugar to the custard mixture and spread it over the first layer.
For the chocolate ganache, melt 4 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 2 teaspoons of butter in the microwave, stirring until smooth.
If needed, add 1-2 teaspoons of heavy cream to achieve a glossy consistency.
Spread the chocolate ganache over the custard layer and refrigerate until set.
