Set up a double boiler by placing a heat safe bowl on top of a saucepan of barely simmering water.
Add 1/2 cup of softened butter, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 5 tbsp of unsweetened cocoa powder to the bowl; stir occasionally until melted and smooth.
Slowly add 1 beaten egg into the melted chocolate mixture a little at a time, whisking until thick (about 2 to 3 minutes).
Remove the bowl from the heat and add 1 and 3/4 cups of graham cracker crumbs, 1 cup of flake coconut, and if desired, 1/2 cup of finely chopped almonds; stir together until well combined.
Prepare an 8x8 inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper.
Press the chocolate mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan to create the base of the Nanaimo bars.
In a medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup of softened butter, 3 tbsp of heavy cream, and 2 tbsp of custard powder; beat together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
Add in 2 cups of confectioner sugar and continue mixing until smooth.
Spread the creamy filling onto the bottom chocolate layer and cover; chill in the refrigerator until set (about 1 hour).
In a microwave safe bowl, add 4 1 oz squares of semi sweet baking chocolate and 2 tsp of butter; microwave on low in 30 second intervals until melted.
Spread the slightly cooled melted chocolate over the top and allow it to set before cutting into squares.
