Rinse the lentils under running cold water and drain.
Transfer the lentils to a large pot and add the water; cook over high heat.
Upon boiling, cover the pot, reduce heat to low, and let it cook for about 1 hour until the lentils are ultra soft.
Puree the lentils using an immersion blender until completely smooth, or use a handmill.
Add the washed and drained rice to the pot with the lentils.
Reduce heat to low and leave it to cook for about 30 to 35 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid catching on the bottom of the pot.
The consistency should be similar to creamy pudding and will thicken upon cooling.
In a large skillet, add olive oil and chopped onions; cook over medium heat, stirring regularly until the onions wilt and change color.
Add the lightly browned onions to the lentils and stir well to homogenize the mix; cook for one more minute while stirring.
Season the mixture with salt and freshly grated black pepper, or add cumin powder if preferred.
