Loukoumades, originating from the Ottoman Empire, are a beloved Turkish dessert often served at celebrations. These sweet, fried dough balls are soaked in honey syrup and dusted with powdered sugar, making them a delightful treat. Today, they are enjoyed not only in Turkey but also in various forms across the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, often served at festivals and family gatherings.

Combine dry ingredients: flour, instant yeast, and sugar in a bowl using a whisk.
Add buttermilk and warm water to the dry ingredients, starting with a lower amount of liquid and adding more as needed.
Incorporate vanilla and 1 egg into the mixture, noting that the egg adds structure but can be omitted for a lighter texture.
Add salt at the end to avoid contact with the yeast and mix until a stretchy dough forms.
Let the dough sit for about 1 to 1.5 hours until it doubles in size.
Prepare diced apples by lightly caramelizing them and setting aside to cool.
Heat oil to 340°F (170°C) for frying the dough.
Using hands, scoop the dough into the hot oil, ensuring the temperature is correct to avoid greasy or burnt donuts.
Fry until golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes, and drain on paper towels after frying.
Drizzle with Greek honey and top with cooled caramelized apples and heaps of cinnamon.
