Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup peeled and diced apples
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 1-2 tbsp milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. 1In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter over low heat until warm and butter is melted. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. 2In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and yeast.
  3. 3Add the warm milk mixture, egg, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. 4Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. 6Once risen, roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. 7Spread the diced apples evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon, and walnuts if using.
  8. 8Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  9. 9Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. 10Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. 11While the rolls are baking, mix powdered sugar with enough milk to create a smooth icing. Drizzle over warm rolls before serving.
