Homemade Pop Tarts

Cultural Context

Pop Tarts originated in the United States in the 1960s as a convenient breakfast option. They quickly became a beloved snack for both children and adults, often enjoyed toasted or straight from the package. The homemade version allows for creativity with fillings and toppings, making them a fun treat for any occasion. Today, variations abound, with flavors ranging from classic fruit fillings to decadent chocolate, appealing to a wide range of tastes.

Whole wheat flour adds fiber.

1

Start by mixing 1.5 cups of all-purpose flour with 0.5 teaspoons of salt and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a bowl.

2

Add 0.5 cups of oil to the mixture.

3

Since I don't have milk, I'm using 2 tablespoons of half and half and 1.5 tablespoons of water instead of the 3.5 tablespoons of milk the recipe calls for.

4

Stir the mixture until it comes together, adjusting with more milk or flour if needed.

5

Sprinkle some flour on a surface and roll out the dough as thin as possible.

6

Cut the rolled dough into rectangles, about 3x5 inches, to resemble pop tarts.

7

Place a spoonful of strawberry jam in the center of half the rectangles.

8

Top with the remaining rectangles and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.

9

Place the pop tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

10

Brush the tops with an egg wash made from a scrambled egg for a golden finish.

11

Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).

12

Bake the pop tarts for about 10 minutes, checking for doneness.

13

Let them cool before icing.

14

Mix powdered sugar with a little half and half and vanilla to make the icing, then drizzle it over the cooled pop tarts.

15

Sprinkle with colored sanding sugar or sprinkles.
