Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius.

In a bowl, add 1 cup of dates and pour in 1 cup of boiling water and 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Mash the dates and set aside.

In another bowl, add 2 eggs, 3/4 cup of dark brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of soft butter. Cream together.

Sift in 1.5 cups of cake flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix well.

Fold in the mashed dates mixture into the batter.

Grease a round porridge dish and pour the batter into it.

Bake in the oven at 175 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes, checking with a toothpick for doneness.

For the toffee sauce, in a pot, melt 3 tablespoons of butter, then add 3/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of cream. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens.
