1 cup walnuts

Divide the dough into 2 large and 1 small parts and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Prepare the filling by beating 2 egg whites with a pinch of salt until foamy, about 2-3 minutes.

Grind 300 g (10 oz) walnuts and/or pecans and mix with 400 g (2 c) sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Divide into 2 parts.

Grease a 13" X 9" (33 cm X 22 cm) baking pan (Pyrex).

Spread half of the filling evenly on the bottom of the pan.

Roll out the large dough ball and place it over the filling.

Cut the baklava into diamond-shaped slices and place half a pecan into the middle of each baklava and press slightly.

Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F).

Bake for 40 minutes at 180 C (350 F).

Prepare the syrup by bringing 200 g (1 c) sugar, 115 ml (1/2 c) water, and 30 g honey or golden syrup to a boil over medium heat, then simmer for 10 minutes.

Generously pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava and bake for another 10 minutes.

Let cool at room temperature.
