Bring a pot of water to a simmer, with bubbles at the bottom but not boiling aggressively.

Take 2 eggs and poke a pin through the base of each eggshell.

Gently place the eggs into the simmering water and set a timer for 5 minutes.

While the eggs are cooking, butter a piece of toast.

Chop the piece of toast down the middle and then into strips for dippable soldiers.

When the timer goes off, remove the eggs from the water immediately.

Take one egg and fold it over for control, then use a serrated knife to tap and chop the top off.

Repeat with the second egg, ensuring to control the knife to avoid slipping.

Season the eggs with salt and pepper to taste.

Dip the toast soldiers into the yolk and enjoy.
