Banana Bread

Cultural Context

Banana bread is a popular quick bread that originated in the United States during the Great Depression. It became a staple in American households due to its simplicity and the ability to use overripe bananas that might otherwise go to waste. Today, it is enjoyed as a snack or dessert and can be found in various adaptations, including nut and chocolate chip variations.

1

Smash 3 ripe bananas in a bowl using a fork until they become liquid-like.

2

Add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, a pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil to the smashed bananas.

3

Mix in 1 1/2 cups of flour until there are no clumps of flour in the batter.

4

Prepare the crock-pot by lining it with parchment paper, ensuring to leave tabs for easy removal.

5

Spray the parchment-lined crock-pot with cooking spray to prevent sticking.

6

Pour the batter into the prepared crock-pot.

7

Cover the crock-pot with the lid and set it to high for a couple of hours.

8

After about 1 hour and 40 minutes, check the banana bread with a toothpick to see if it comes out clean.

9

If the toothpick comes out clean, let it sit with the lid slightly ajar for about 10 minutes to reduce condensation.

10

Remove the banana bread using the parchment paper tabs and let it cool on a wire rack.
