In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of milk, 3 large eggs, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1/4 cup of maple syrup, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
Whisk the mixture together until smooth and creamy.
In a separate bowl, mix together 1/3 cup of brown sugar, 1/3 cup of white sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a touch of nutmeg to create a cinnamon sugar mixture.
Cut thick slices (about half an inch) from a day-old loaf of French bread.
Layer the bread slices into a medium-sized casserole pan, dipping each slice into the custard mixture to ensure it is well-soaked.
Sprinkle each soaked piece of bread with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Pour any remaining custard over the top of the bread and sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar.
Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the French toast for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until caramelized and golden on top.
Prepare fresh berries (raspberries and sliced strawberries) and whipped cream while the French toast bakes.
Once baked, add the fresh berries on top, serve with whipped cream if desired, and drizzle with maple syrup and confectioner sugar.
