Homemade can be made with simple ingredients.

1

Prepare one package of Devil's food cake mix according to package directions, decreasing the water to 3/4 cup.

2

Drop batter onto two sheet pans lined with parchment in 2 and 1/2 to 3 inch circles.

3

Bake in the preheated oven according to the box directions until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 16 minutes.

4

While the cakes are cooling, pour 1 cup of milk into a small saucepan and stir in 5 tbsp of flour, cooking and stirring until it forms a thick paste, then remove from heat and let cool.

5

In a medium bowl, place 1 cup of sugar and add 1 cup of shortening, beating with an electric mixer until fluffy.

6

Add 2 tsp of vanilla extract and continue beating.

7

Gradually add the cooled flour and milk mixture, beating until the filling doubles in volume.

8

Turn half of the little cakes over and spread a dollop of the filling onto the bottom halves, then top each filled cake with another cake to form a sandwich.
