Homemade can be made with simple ingredients.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Empty the cake mix into a mixing bowl.
Add 1 and 1/4 cups of water, 3/4 cup of oil, and 5 eggs to the cake mix.
Mix the ingredients together until well combined.
Prepare two jelly roll pans by lining them with wax paper and spraying with cooking spray.
Divide the cake batter evenly between the two pans.
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes.
Let the cakes cool completely after baking.
In a saucepan, warm 3/4 cup of evaporated milk.
In a stand mixer, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gradually add 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar to the egg whites.
Add the warm evaporated milk, 3/4 cup of butter, and 3/4 cup of shortening to the mixture.
Mix in 3 teaspoons of vanilla until the icing thickens.
Spread the icing on one half of the cooled cake and place the other half on top.
Cut into pieces and serve or freeze for later.
