Break cinnamon sticks in half and toast them in a pot on high heat with whole cloves until aromatic.

Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cook until most of the water is gone (8-15 minutes).

In a separate pot, warm whole milk and add 2 tablespoons of maseca mixed with 1/2 cup water, stirring until thick.

Once the rice is almost cooked, remove cloves and add the warm milk mixture to the rice.

Stir in turbinado sugar and golden raisins, and add vanilla extract.

Set heat to low and cook for an additional 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
