Originating from the Hatay region of Turkey, Hatay Künefe is a beloved dessert that showcases the region's rich culinary heritage. Traditionally served warm, this sweet treat features layers of crispy pastry filled with melted cheese, drenched in fragrant sugar syrup. It is often enjoyed during special occasions and gatherings, symbolizing hospitality and celebration. Today, künefe has gained popularity beyond Turkey, with variations appearing in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines.

Instructions

  1. 1Prepare the sugar syrup by combining sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan; bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. 2Remove from heat and add rose water; set aside to cool.
  3. 3Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. 4Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat.
  5. 5Add the kataifi pastry to the melted butter; toss to coat evenly and cook until golden, about 5-7 minutes.
  6. 6Spread half of the kataifi mixture evenly in a greased baking dish.
  7. 7Layer the unsalted cheese over the kataifi base, spreading it evenly.
  8. 8Top with the remaining kataifi mixture, pressing down gently.

Instructions
