Heat 1 and 1/2 cups of maple syrup and 3/4 cup of water over high heat until it comes to a boil.

Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter until melted, then set aside off heat.

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of white granulated sugar, 1/3 cup of milk, 1 large egg, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of butter.

Blend everything together by hand or with an electric mixer until smooth to form a thick batter.

Grease an 8 by 8 inch baking dish.

Spread the cake batter into the bottom of the dish.
