The dish has gained popularity beyond Turkey, with variations appearing in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, making it a cherished treat worldwide.

Roll out 6 pieces of phyllo dough to the size of a serving plate, using a thick rolling pin.
Stack the rolled dough pieces on top of each other, sprinkling plenty of starch between each layer.
Check between the layers for sticking and sprinkle a little starch as needed.
Switch to a steel rolling pin for better rolling of the dough layers.
Roll out the dough layers while ensuring they are aired out and not sticking together.
Prepare a 30 by 40 cm tray for the baklava.
Place half of the rolled dough in the tray, ensuring even coverage.
Generously place walnuts on top of the dough in the tray.
Sprinkle melted butter between the layers of dough using a brush, applying it in small drops.
Cut the baklava into diamond shapes with a knife after layering the dough and walnuts.
Bake the baklava in the oven at 170 degrees Celsius for about 1 hour, checking for doneness as it may vary by oven.
While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining 6.5 cups of water, 5 cups of sugar, and a piece of lemon in a saucepan.
Bring the syrup mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and check for syrup consistency by lifting some with a ladle and observing the drop.
Once the baklava is baked, pour the hot syrup evenly over it and allow it to rest before serving.
