Waterzooi Chicken Stew

Cultural Context

Originating from the coastal regions of Belgium, Waterzooi is a traditional stew that highlights the region's fresh ingredients, particularly chicken or fish, simmered with vegetables in a creamy broth. Historically, it was a dish for fishermen, evolving into a beloved family meal. Today, variations exist, with some using fish instead of chicken, reflecting the dish's adaptability and enduring popularity across Belgium and beyond.
