Heat milk, butter, sugar, and salt in a pot until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts.
Set the milk mixture aside to cool.
Proof the yeast by mixing it with warm water and a teaspoon of sugar, letting it foam up.
Add the cooled milk mixture to a bowl and then add the foamed yeast and one lightly beaten egg, whisking until blended.
Sift in the flour gradually, mixing until the dough is springy and not too sticky.
Knead the dough for about 15 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
Grease a large bowl with butter and place the dough inside, rolling it to coat.
Cover the bowl and let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Divide the dough in two and shape each half into three pieces, rolling them into 14-inch lengths.
Braid the three pieces together and place on a lined baking sheet.
Cover with a damp towel and let rest again.
Brush the top with water and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
Bake at 350°F until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
