Onion Rings

Cultural Context

Onion rings are a popular American snack and side dish, often served in diners and fast-food restaurants. They are made by slicing onions, dipping them in batter, and frying until crispy. This dish has become a staple in American cuisine, often enjoyed with burgers or as a standalone appetizer.

1

Welcome to Tai's Conscious Kitchen. Today I'm making alkaline onion rings.

2

Take a half a cup of aquafaba and a half a cup of hemp seed milk, and whisk them together.

3

If you don't have aquafaba, you can use a cup of regular milk instead.

4

Add a teaspoon of oregano, a teaspoon of onion powder, a teaspoon of sea salt, and a half a teaspoon of cayenne powder to the mixture and let it sit.

5

Cut the top and bottom off the sweet onion, score it to remove the skin, and then cut it into 1/4 inch thick rings.

6

Separate the onion rings and save the middles for other recipes.

7

Put the onion rings into the aquafaba and hemp seed milk mixture and stir to coat them.

8

Coat a cookie sheet with one or two tablespoons of grape seed oil to prevent sticking.

9

In a container with a lid, combine a cup of spelt flour, a teaspoon of onion powder, a teaspoon of sea salt, a teaspoon of oregano, and a half a teaspoon of cayenne powder, and shake to mix.

10

Take some of the soaked onion rings, coat them in the flour mixture, dip them back into the liquid batter, and place them on the cookie sheet.

11

If the onion rings don't have enough coating, dip them back into the flour and repeat the process.

12

Add a little more oil to the cookie sheet to prevent sticking.

13

Place the cookie sheet in the oven at 450°F for about 10 to 15 minutes.

14

After about 13 minutes, check the onion rings. They should be crispy underneath.

15

Scrape the onion rings off the cookie sheet as they tend to stick, and flip them halfway through if desired.
