Turkey Meatballs

Cultural Context

Turkey meatballs have become a staple in American cuisine, often enjoyed for their versatility and ease of preparation. They can be served in various ways, such as with pasta, in sandwiches, or on their own with sauce. This dish reflects a broader trend toward healthier eating, as ground turkey is a leaner alternative to traditional beef or pork meatballs. 1

Make the simple tomato sauce (link provided in the description).

2

Prepare the meatball ingredients: use 2 lbs of ground turkey, 1 grated medium yellow onion, salt, ground black pepper, garlic powder, dried oregano, plain breadcrumbs, grated Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese, milk, fresh basil leaves, and 2 large eggs.

3

Chop the basil leaves and add them to the meat mixture.

4

Mix the ground turkey with the chopped basil, grated onion, salt, pepper, garlic powder, Pecorino Romano, crushed dried oregano, breadcrumbs, and milk.

Use an ice cream scoop to make even meatballs and roll them into balls, dipping hands in water to prevent sticking.

6

Drop the meatballs directly into the sauce and stir gently.

7

Cover and cook for 20 minutes.

8

While the meatballs cook, boil water for spaghetti, add a tsp of coarse salt, and cook the pasta until tender.
