Cultural Context

Mincemeat pie has its origins in medieval England, where it was a way to preserve meat and fruits during the winter months. Traditionally served during the Christmas season, this pie symbolizes festive gatherings and celebrations. Over time, the recipe evolved, and today, it is filled with a mixture of fruits and spices, often enjoyed with a dollop of cream or custard. Its rich flavors and historical significance make it a beloved holiday treat.

1

Make a pie crust (link to video provided in description).

2

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and place a baking sheet in the oven.

3

Wash and peel 2 apples, then core and chop them into small pieces.

4

Place chopped apples into a large saucepan.

5

Zest 2 oranges and measure out 1 tablespoon of zest, adding it to the saucepan.

6

Add 2.5 cups of dried fruit (raisins, dried cranberries, dried cherries) to the saucepan.

7

Add 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup apple cider, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 2 tablespoons butter, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon salt to the saucepan.

8

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and stir to combine.

9

Heat the mixture until it boils, stirring occasionally.

10

Once boiling, keep it over heat for another 5 minutes until it thickens, stirring occasionally.

11

Remove from heat and pour the mixture into a separate bowl to cool completely (can refrigerate to speed up the process).

12

Pour the cooled mixture into the prepared pie crust, ensuring the crust is well chilled.

13

Roll out more pie crust, roll it around a rolling pin, and unroll it over the top of the pie.

14

Trim off excess crust from around the edges and seal the two crusts tightly together.

15

Brush the top with milk or an egg wash for a golden color when baked.

16

Cut a few slits in the top of the pie to let steam escape while baking.

17

Place the pie into the oven on top of the heated baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

18

After 10 minutes, turn the oven temperature down to 350°F (175°C) and bake for another 45 minutes.

19

Once done, remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for about 15 to 20 minutes before serving.
