Szarlotka, or Polish apple pie, has its roots in Poland's agricultural traditions, where apples are abundant. This comforting dessert is often enjoyed during family gatherings and festive occasions, symbolizing warmth and togetherness. In modern times, variations abound, with some incorporating different fruits or spices, making it a beloved treat both in Poland and among Polish communities worldwide.

Pears provide a different flavor profile while maintaining moisture.
Peel the apples and cut them into slices.
Add the cinnamon and half the sugar to the apples.
Cook the apples for 20 minutes until they are soft and begin to break.
Integrate the baking powder, cold butter, and the rest of the sugar into the flour.
Add the egg and vanilla essence at the end.
Divide the dough in half.
Freeze the dough for 15 minutes.
Take half of the dough out of the freezer, cut it into slices and use them to form the base of the cake.
Pour the applesauce after draining the excess water from the cooked apples.
Grate the rest of the dough on top of the apple filling.
Preheat the oven to 180 ºC (356 F) and bake for 50 minutes.
Cool before unmolding.
Sprinkle the cake with icing sugar.
