Over time, it evolved into a sweet dessert, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. Traditionally, families would stir the mixture together, each making a wish, and it is often served flambéed with brandy on Christmas Day. Today, variations abound, and it remains a beloved holiday staple in many English-speaking countries.

Start with a large bowl for mixing.
Add Golden Raisins, Currents, and regular raisins into the bowl.
Add Candied Peel to the fruit mixture.
Peel and grate a Granny Smith apple into the bowl.
Add lemon zest and lemon juice to the mixture.
Add melted butter into the bowl.
Add whole or slivered almonds to the mixture.
Add mixed spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, mace) into the bowl.
Crack an egg into the mixture.
Pour in a splash of milk.
Add a pinch of salt to the mixture.
Add fresh bread crumbs into the bowl.
Pour in stout for flavor and preservation.
Add trickel (molasses) to the mixture.
Mix all ingredients together with a spatula until well combined.
Cover the bowl with cling wrap and refrigerate overnight to let flavors marry.
After 24 hours, remove the mixture from the fridge and prepare to steam.
Grease a pudding basin well before adding the mixture.
Press the pudding mixture into the basin firmly.
Cover the top of the pudding with a round of parchment paper and then wrap tightly with tin foil.
Wrap twine around the top of the pudding to make it easier to lift out later.
Fill a large pot with boiling water until it reaches the bottom of the steamer tray.
Place the pudding basin into the pot.
Cover the pot and set the heat to medium-low to maintain a strong simmer.
Steam the pudding for about 2.5 to 3 hours, checking the water level every 25 minutes and topping up with more boiling water as needed.
