Hot Cross Buns have their origins in England, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. The cross symbolizes the crucifixion, and the spices represent the spices used in the embalming of Christ. These sweet, spiced buns have become a symbol of Easter and are enjoyed by many during the season. Today, variations exist worldwide, with different spices and fillings, making them a beloved treat beyond just the holiday.

Chop the blended cherries and raisins super fine for even distribution in the dough.
Combine the dry ingredients: nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder, then mix well and set aside.
In a separate bowl, add sugar to warm evaporated milk and stir.
Add activated yeast to the milk mixture, then add vanilla and melted butter, stir and set aside.
Combine the chopped fruit with the dry ingredients, then add the wet ingredients and stir until well combined.
The dough will be sticky; this is desired for fluffy buns. Avoid adding flour to combat stickiness, use oil instead.
Cover the dough and allow it to rise for about 1 hour.
After rising, release the air from the dough and grease the surface (do not use flour).
Cut the dough into equal pieces and roll them into small balls.
Place the dough balls into a baking dish and cover them to rise again for about 45 minutes.
After the second rise, cut crosses on top of the buns using kitchen scissors.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the buns for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
Prepare a glaze using one part water and two parts sugar, making it extra sweet.
Once the buns are out of the oven, glaze them immediately while they are hot.
Optionally, add cherries on top for decoration before serving.
