Hot Cross Buns

Cultural Context

Hot Cross Buns have their origins in England, traditionally eaten on Good Friday. The cross symbolizes the crucifixion, and the spices represent the spices used in the embalming of Christ. These sweet, spiced buns have become a symbol of Easter and are enjoyed by many during the season. Today, variations exist worldwide, with different spices and fillings, making them a beloved treat beyond just the holiday.

1

Put the milk, yeast, butter, egg, sugar, flour, cinnamon, all spice, salt, and currants into the mixer and mix until just combined.

2

Sprinkle a little flour onto the dough, then remove the bowl from the mixer.

3

Dust the work surface with flour, remove the dough from the mixer bowl, and if it seems too sticky, add a little more flour.

4

Knead the dough with your hands until it has an elastic consistency, shape it into a ball, and put it into a bowl covered with a towel to rise until it doubles in size.

5

After the dough has risen, sprinkle a little flour over it, punch the air out with your knuckles, and remove it from the bowl.

6

Place the dough onto your work surface, shape it into a log, and cut it into six pieces.

7

Take one piece and shape it into a ball by folding the dough inwards and rolling it with the palm of your hand; repeat for the remaining pieces.

8

Place the shaped buns onto a pre-lined baking tray, cover them with a towel, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes or until they double in size.

9

Preheat the oven to 170°C (gas mark 3) while the dough rises.

10

Once the buns have doubled in size, brush them all over with the egg wash, then cut a deep cross into the center of each bun.

11

Place the buns in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

12

Let the buns cool for a few minutes and serve them hot or cold.
