Boil water in a pot and add a small amount of brown sugar.
Add dates to the boiling water and let it thicken.
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and baking powder.
Mix the dry ingredients until incorporated.
Add butter to the dry mixture and mix until crumbly, using hands if necessary.
Add about a teaspoon of lemon juice to the thickened dates and mix.
Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of a greased 9-inch or 8-inch baking dish.
Spread the thickened dates evenly over the pressed oat layer.
Top with the remaining oat mixture, pressing it down gently.
Bake in a preheated oven at 175°C (fan oven) for about 25-35 minutes.
Let cool before cutting into squares.
