Traditionally made with rice and beans, the dish is celebrated for its simplicity and versatility, often served with a variety of accompaniments like fried plantains, boiled eggs, or stewed meats. In recent years, Waakye has gained popularity beyond Ghana, with variations appearing in other West African countries and among diaspora communities, showcasing its adaptability and enduring appeal.

Wash and soak sorghum leaves for at least four hours.
Wash beans thoroughly and soak for 45 minutes to an hour.
Add beans to a pot with enough water to cover and cook until tender without adding salt.
After soaking, add a bit of baking soda to the sorghum leaves to intensify color (optional).
Once beans are tender, wash 3 cups of jasmine rice and add it to the beans.
Add the soaked sorghum liquid and salt to taste, then stir.
Check water level and add more if necessary for desired texture.
Cover with parchment paper and a lid, bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer until ready.
Prepare spaghetti (Talia) by boiling until al dente, then set aside.
Prepare dry salad by cutting red onion, tomatoes, and lettuce, soaking onion in water with salt to reduce smell.
