Croutons originated as a way to use stale bread, transforming it into a crunchy topping for soups and salads. They add texture and flavor, enhancing the overall dish. Today, croutons are a staple in many cuisines, often seasoned in various ways to suit different palates and dishes.

Nutritional yeast provides a cheesy flavor without dairy.
Cut or tear day-old bread or a French loaf into three-quarter inch cubes.
Slice the bread into three-quarter inch thick pieces, stack them, cut into strips, then into cubes.
In a large bowl, drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the bread cubes and stir to coat evenly.
Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt and 1/4 teaspoon of Italian seasoning over the bread and toss to combine.
Transfer the bread to a sheet pan, spreading it into an even layer for even toasting.
Bake in the center of the oven at 375°F for about 5 minutes, checking for golden brown color.
If needed, bake for an additional 2 to 4 minutes until completely dry.
Let the croutons sit on the sheet pan for 10 minutes to dry out further.
For stovetop croutons, heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
Once the oil shimmers, add 4 cups of bread cubes and stir to coat with the oil.
Toast the bread in the pan, stirring every few minutes until golden brown and crispy, about 8 to 10 minutes.
If needed, turn down the heat to prevent burning.
Once the oil is absorbed, add 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt and 1/4 teaspoon of Italian seasoning to the pan.
Let the croutons sit in the pan off the heat for about 10 minutes to dry out completely.
