Welcome to the kitchen; we're making a rustic apple galette.
In a food processor, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Pulse to mix.
Add 1/4 cup of cubed cold unsalted butter and 1/2 cup of vegetable shortening to the flour mixture. Pulse again until combined.
Add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla Madagascar bourbon extract and nearly 1/2 cup of ice cold water. Pulse until the dough comes together.
Wrap the dough in cling wrap and flatten it out. Refrigerate for a couple of hours or overnight.
Take the chilled dough out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before rolling it out.
Dust a pastry mat and rolling pin with flour, then roll out the dough into a rustic shape.
Transfer the rolled dough to a baking tray lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat and chill it again while preparing the filling.
Slice 2 medium sized apples and juice half a lemon over them to prevent browning.
In a bowl, combine the sliced apples with 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon sugar, and 2 tablespoons of apple pie compound. Toss to mix well.
Remove the chilled dough and arrange the apple mixture in a spiral pattern on top of the dough.
Fold the edges of the dough over the apples, creating a rustic look.
Pour any remaining juice from the apples over the filling.
Brush the crust with a beaten egg for an egg wash.
Bake at 400°F for 25 to 30 minutes, adding an extra 5 minutes for a deeper golden color if desired.
Once baked, cut into the galette and serve with ice cream.
