Cultural Context

Sweet tea is a quintessential beverage in the Southern United States, often enjoyed during hot summer days and social gatherings. Its origins trace back to the early 19th century when tea became popular in America, particularly in the South. Sweet tea is not just a drink but a cultural staple, symbolizing hospitality and warmth. Today, it is widely enjoyed across the country, with variations including flavored teas and different sweeteners.

Servings4
4 cups boiling water
6 Lipton cup-size tea bags or 3 family-sized tea bags
a pinch of baking soda
1.5 cups sugar (or to taste)
cold water to fill the gallon pitcher
lemon (optional)
fresh mint (optional)
1

Boil 4 cups of water in a medium-sized saucepan.

2

Once boiling, remove from heat.

3

Tie the strings of the tea bags together to prevent them from falling into the water.

4

Drop the tea bags into the pot and give them a quick dunk.

5

Cover the pot and let the tea steep for about 15 minutes.

6

After steeping, remove the tea bags and give them a good squeeze.

7

Add a pinch of baking soda to the tea to prevent bitterness and enhance color.

8

Measure out 1.5 cups of sugar and add it to the tea, stirring until completely dissolved.

9

If sugar does not dissolve easily, return the pot to the stove for a little extra heat.

10

Pour the tea into a gallon pitcher and top off with cold water to fill the pitcher.

11

Refrigerate the tea to cool for several hours before serving.

12

Serve with lemon and fresh mint if desired.
