In a bowl, mix melted butter and powdered sugar.
Add egg yolks, salt, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and almonds, then mix well.
Add baking powder and gradually mix in all-purpose flour until a very soft dough forms.
Form small balls of dough and brush with egg white or dip fingers in egg white to wet the balls.
Drop the balls in chopped almonds to coat them.
Place the balls in mini baking cups on a baking sheet.
Place a whole almond in the center of each ball of dough.
Optionally, place a red candied cherry in the center of each ball or make indentations for later.
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
After baking, pour about 1 tablespoon of sugar syrup on each cookie and let absorb.
