While the classic version features provolone or Cheez Whiz, variations abound, showcasing different toppings and styles across the U.S.

Cut the onion in half and thinly slice it, then separate the slices with your fingers.
Wash half of a large bell pepper, remove the seeds, and thinly slice it.
Trim excess fat from two thin cut ribeye steaks, then slice the meat against the grain as thin as possible.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of canola oil.
Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook for about 2 minutes until it starts to brown.
Add the sliced bell pepper to the skillet and stir; cook for about 10 minutes until the onion is brown and the peppers are softened.
Remove the onion and bell pepper mixture from the skillet and set aside.
Add another tablespoon of canola oil to the skillet and add the sliced steak.
Season the meat with 1 teaspoon of spice blend seasoning and 1 teaspoon of black pepper; cook for about 8 minutes until browned.
Once the meat is cooked, add 1 teaspoon of salt and stir; then add back the onion and bell pepper mixture.
Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the meat and vegetable mixture and stir until combined.
Turn off the stove and layer provolone cheese on top of the meat; let it melt with the residual heat.
Butter the hoagie rolls and toast them in the skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
Assemble the sandwich by filling the toasted hoagie rolls with the cheesy meat and vegetable mixture.
