Brazilian Rice
Cultural Context
Brazilian rice, or 'arroz', is a staple in Brazilian cuisine, often served alongside beans and meat. It reflects the country's agricultural abundance and diverse culinary influences. Traditionally, it's prepared simply with onions and garlic, but modern variations include vegetables and spices, making it a versatile accompaniment enjoyed in homes across Brazil.

Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering.
Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Stir in minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat in the oil.
Pour in water and add salt, black pepper, and bay leaves.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
Cover the pot and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is tender and water is absorbed.
Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in chopped parsley, carrots, peas, bell pepper, and corn.
Add butter and mix until melted and well combined.
Serve warm as a side dish.
