1

Start by cooking the heart of palm in boiling water for about 15 minutes after draining it.

2

In a separate pan, melt 1 tablespoon of margarine and add 1.5 tablespoons of flour to make a roux.

3

Gradually add in 350 ml of milk while stirring to avoid lumps, cooking on low heat until it thickens.

4

Add 200 g of requeijão to the thickened sauce and mix well.

5

Once the heart of palm is cooked, drain it and add it to the white sauce, mixing until combined.

6

Season the mixture with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and adjust to taste if necessary.

7

For the dough, mix 80 ml of milk with 250 g of margarine and half of a beaten egg, reserving the other half for brushing later.

8

Add 500 g of flour to the mixture and combine until you have a firm dough, without needing to knead it.

9

Press 450 g of the dough into the bottom of a 30 cm round pie dish, ensuring a good base.

10

Pre-bake the crust at 200°C for 15-20 minutes until set.

11

Roll out the remaining dough to cover the top of the pie, using plastic wrap to help shape it.

12

Once the crust is pre-baked, fill it with the heart of palm mixture, ensuring it's well filled.

13

Cover the pie with the rolled-out dough, sealing the edges by pressing them together and trimming any excess.

14

Brush the top with the reserved beaten egg for a golden finish.

15

Bake the pie in the oven until golden brown, using the option to just brown the top.
