In a pan, heat oil and sauté diced onion until golden.
Add tomato sauce, sugar to reduce acidity, and a bit of water; let it thicken and then set aside.
In a large bowl, mash potatoes well with a fork.
Add milk, eggs, margarine, and flour to the mashed potatoes and mix well.
In a large baking dish, layer half of the gnocchi mixture, followed by half of the sauce, then add ham and cheese on top.
Repeat with the remaining gnocchi mixture and sauce, finishing with grated parmesan cheese on top.
Bake in the oven at 180°C (about 350°F) for 30 minutes.
