Mix 1/2 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of sugar in a bowl.
Add 1 egg and 6 tablespoons of sliced butter to the mixture.
Mix in 1/2 tablespoon of yeast and 3/4 of the flour for about 2 minutes.
Finish mixing in the remaining flour by hand until it sticks together and is soft.
Cover the dough with flour and let it rest in a bowl for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Roll out the dough into an oblong shape.
Shred 14 tablespoons of ice cold butter on half of the dough.
Fold the other half of the dough over the butter and press it down.
Roll the dough out again to be twice as long as it is wide, folding it together three times, resting in between if necessary.
Cut slits along the sides of the dough without cutting the center part.
Prepare the filling by mixing 1/4 cup of almond paste, 1/4 cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons of softened butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Spread the filling in the center of the dough.
Braid the dough by folding the slits over the filling.
Place the braided pastry on a buttered and floured baking sheet and cover it to rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Brush the top with an egg mixed with 1 tablespoon of milk.
Sprinkle sugar on top before baking.
Bake in a preheated oven at 390°F for 25-30 minutes.
